Sport fishing is one of the most popular attractions for travelers visiting Cabo San Lucas, with plenty of massive fish like Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and Marlin lurking just past the rocky shoreline.

It’s no wonder that Cabo San Lucas attracts serious anglers and fishing enthusiasts from around the world during the fishing tournament season — from June to November — each year. If you’d like to plan your vacation to Cabo San Lucas to line up with these sport fishing tournaments, consider traveling during one of the following events.

Best Cabo San Lucas Fishing Tournaments

1. Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Tournament

Pelagic hosts several fishing tournaments in countries across Central America and the Caribbean, including Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. The Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing is the event hosted in Cabo San Lucas and focuses on catching Striped Marlin, Dorado, Sailfish, Spearfish, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna.

Thirty-three teams participated in this year’s event, and the cash prizes totaled $402,800. Next year’s event should be around the same time, so keep your eyes peeled for registration. Pelagic also hosts a Pelagic Triple Crown of Fishing Summer Slam Tournament in Cabo San Lucas in June.

2. Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament

Bisbee hosts some of the most sought-after sport fishing events in Los Cabos. The first, Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament, is one of the most well-known events on the East Cape. It’s considered the world’s “richest” fishing tournament, with potential for more than a million dollars in payouts. In 2022, the total payout was $1,614,425 for just under 100 teams.

Teams must spend at least $1,500 to enter this event, and prize money is given to those who catch the most Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Tuna, and Dorado. For 2023, registration is on August 1st, the fishing days are August 2nd – 4th, and prizes are awarded on August 5th.

3. Los Cabos Billfish Tournament

The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is one of the world’s most popular sport fishing tournaments. As the name suggests, this tournament awards hefty cash prizes for billfish, like Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, and Sailfish, but also offers prizes for Dorado, Wahoo, and Tuna.

Teams must pay at least $1,500 to enter the competition, and prizes are split between the first, second, and third-place winners from the prize pool. Last year, more than $862,000 in cash was awarded, so the potential payout is significant. This year, registration is on October 15th, the fishing competition lasts from October 16th – 18th, and the awards banquet takes place on October 19th.

4. Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament

Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament is another one of the most sought-after sport fishing events in Cabo San Lucas — especially because this event offers more affordable entry fees. However, the cash prizes still total over one million dollars and are awarded to the top three teams based on the single heaviest Black or Blue Marlin (billfish) and Tuna or Dorado (gamefish).

This year, pre-registration and registration occur from October 18th – 19th, the event occurs on October 20th – 21st, and the awards celebration is held on October 22nd.

5. Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament

Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Tournament has been one of the most iconic fishing tournaments in Los Cabos for the past 35 years. As the name suggests, this event focuses on catching Striped, Blue, and Black Marlin and offers some of the biggest prizes in outdoor sports.

The base entry for this event is $5,000 per fishing team, and after all the jackpots, an across-the-board entry is $71,500 per team. However, you can expect extremely high payouts because of the high prices. There was a payout of nearly four million dollars to a single team in 2006 — one of the largest payouts in sportfishing history.

This fishing tournament begins on October 23rd – 24th for registration. The competition lasts from October 25th – 27th, and the awards celebration is held on October 28th. If you want to watch some of the best anglers and fishermen in the world in action — this is the event for you!

6. Cabo Tuna Jackpot Tournament

The Cabo Tuna Jackpot Tournament is the final fishing tournament of the year in Los Cabos. Last year, there was a total payout of $1.53 million, so there is plenty of money to be won in this competition!

Of course, the biggest catch in this competition is Tuna, but other gamefish, like Wahoo and Dorado, can result in sizable prizes. Unlike other tournaments, the Cabo Tuna Jackpot allows up to two guests to accompany the fishing team. Registration is on November 1st, the fishing event lasts from November 2nd – 3rd, and prizes are awarded on November 4th.
